The True Cost and Profit of Maize Farming: An Updated Guide
AgriShare · Sep 24, 2026 · 5 min read

Maize farming remains a cornerstone of Ugandan agriculture, but moving from subsistence to profitable commercial farming requires a hard look at the numbers. Many older estimates floating around fail to account for current inflation, rely on outdated grain prices, or omit the crucial inputs required to actually achieve high yields. Let us break down the realistic costs and potential returns for cultivating one acre of maize today, aiming for an ambitious but achievable yield of 3,000 kilograms.
To hit a target of three metric tons per acre, skimping on inputs is not an option. You will need about ten kilograms of high-quality hybrid seeds, such as Longe 10H or Bazooka, which will cost approximately 120,000 Ugandan Shillings. Unlike older estimates that assume zero soil enhancement, modern farming requires fertilizers to reach peak yields. Budgeting for three 50-kilogram bags of NPK for planting and Urea for top dressing will add about 420,000 Shillings to your expenses. Additionally, protecting your crop from the Fall Armyworm and other pests will require about two liters or packs of pesticides at roughly 70,000 Shillings. When you add the cost of basic farm implements like hoes and pangas at 60,000 Shillings, and thirty 100-kilogram capacity empty sacks for 45,000 Shillings, your total initial input costs come to roughly 715,000 Shillings.
