Reducing Post-Harvest Losses on Your Farm

Many farmers focus heavily on production but overlook what happens after harvest. Post-harvest losses can significantly reduce profits and often account for a substantial percentage of total production losses.
Poor harvesting techniques, inadequate storage facilities, improper transportation, and pest infestations are among the leading causes of post-harvest losses. By improving post-harvest practices, farmers can preserve quality, increase income, and improve food security.
Harvest crops at the appropriate maturity stage. Harvesting too early may reduce quality, while harvesting too late can increase spoilage and losses. Use clean harvesting tools and handle produce carefully to avoid bruising and damage.
Proper drying is essential for grains and legumes. Moisture levels should be reduced to safe storage levels before crops are stored. Excess moisture encourages mold growth, pest infestations, and quality deterioration.
